44th Annual Village Fair Days underway in New Milford,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Residents of New Milford for 31 years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the senior couple was all smiles as Mayor read the official proclamation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], denoting their reign as king and queen of the Village Fair 2011.
"It's the people who have kept us here," Marilyn Wanamaker said. "I like the small-town feel. We still have wildlife in our backyard."
Friday drew a crowd despite the rainy mist in the morning air. Kids from the Parks and Recreation summer camp popped bubbles and balanced bubbles on their sneakers at the For Children Only booth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a bubble machine blew a steam into the air.
Kids signed up for youth baseball at the New Milford Youth Baseball booth. It was the first year the organization offered a chance to register for the team at the fair.
"We have over 800 kids in the program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Triple A Commissioner . "We're hosting the New England Championship in New Milford starting Aug. 5."
Democratic mayoral candidate Jeff Winter shook hands with voters, urging them to "think about the quality of our candidates."
Murphy and State Rep. ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], R-67th District,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], attended the opening ceremonies for the fair and offered a Republican presence.
"I wouldn't miss it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Chapin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a New Milford native. "It's nice to the see former kings and queens coming back year after years. It's great to honor them for their years in the town."
A small crowd gathered at the New Milford Fire marshal's booth -- this was the first year they had a full booth at the fair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
On a mock gas range a stove fire was simulated. Smoke poured forth around a pan on one of the "burners." With a simulated fire extinguisher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a fair-goer would stand behind a line,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], six feet from the range,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and "put out the fire." A laser beam went from the extinguisher striking a spot on the pan.
"You want to stand back six feet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said. "An actual fire extinguisher sprays out a white powder substance that blows all over" -- and you don't want to be too close if flames break out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Facey said.
