Introducing His Life And Works,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Born in 1874,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harry Houdini would become among the world's most renowned magicians. He began his magic career performing in sideshows at cheap attractions referred to as Dime Museums. He played the Wild Man in circus acts and taught himself all of the traditional card tricks.
He started the rudimentary versions of his escape acts in the 1890s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He met his wife as they and his brother Dash were performing at Coney Island underneath the billing from the Brothers Houdini,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Bess Rahner replaced Dash and the program was renamed The Houdinis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Bess remained Harry's stage assistant for the rest of his career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In 1899,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harry met another person who would become a vital a part of his professional career- manager Martin Beck. It was Beck who encouraged the young magician to focus more about the escape acts and fewer on the more traditional magic. Beck booked The Houdinis on the vaudeville circuit. The act am popular that the duo was on stage in the best vaudeville houses within months. They then toured Europe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where Harry became known as "The Handcuff King" because of his capability to escape from those restraints.
As part of his act,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Houdini would let the local police to put him in handcuffs and lock him up within their jail- often after allowing them to conduct a strip search. These antics brought him a great deal of success and material wealth. He was able to buy a gorgeous dress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], originally made for Queen Victoria,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a present to his mother and a home stateside in Harlem, Ny (where it remains standing even today).
In the early 1900s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Houdini was back in the United States performing and escaping from entrapments for example handcuffs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], jails,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ropes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chains and straightjackets- often when hanging from rope in plain look at the crowd. Imitators began to shoot up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], inspiring Houdini to move his escapes to water filled cans. The risk of his drowning brought the audiences in. He encouraged others to generate things that he could escape. These entrapments ran a wide gamut from mailbags to nailed shut crates to the belly of the whale that had washed on shore.
Houdini never claimed that his escapes were because of any supernatural powers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but promotional materials from the moment claimed he could "dematerialize". He did let out a few of the "tricks" behind his stunts as they was alive to others within the magic community. Various kinds of locks and cuffs could be opened with the proper amount of applied force. Some others could be opened with shoe strings. He often carried picks or keys hidden on his body and may regurgitate a small key. When he was tied or straitjacketed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he allowed for space to move by puffing out his chest and shoulders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], moving his arms away from the remainder of his body after which dislocating his shoulders.
Houdini's death has become a kind of legend by itself. After one of his shows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Houdini was approached backstage with a college student named J. Gordon Whitehead. Whitehead asked if there were truth towards the rumor the magician could take any hit towards the stomach. Whitehead hit Houdini 3 times prior to the magician said to stop. There have been several more blows put in during which Houdini appeared to be in pain. That incident occurred on October 22, 1926 and Houdini didn't die immediately. He earned it to a show in Michigan about the 24th and performed with a high fever. He was diagnosed with acute appendicitis but refused treatment. He died of peritonitis the result of a ruptured appendix on Halloween night of 1926. He was 52 years of age.
