Be your own barista
Making cafe-quality coffee at home calls for the right equipment and a little know-how.

Australians have become spoilt for choice when it comes to great coffee. The best of our metropolitan cafes can proudly rival those in any of the world's great coffee capitals. But if you're tired of paying $4 a pop for your daily latte, how hard is it to replicate the experience at home?
"There's been a real rise in domestic espresso machines,デュベティカ偽物, as Australians love coffee and we're so used to having good coffee when we go out. There are lots of alternatives in the market,デュベティカ専売店, from those that cost a couple of hundred dollars to those that sell for over a thousand," says Ingrid Gust, spokesperson for consumer advocacy group Choice.
"What we're finding is that the less expensive machines are increasing in technology and efficiency, and the cost of the technology is also decreasing. That combined means you can now get really worthwhile domestic machines for affordable prices."
Choice regularly conducts extensive comparison tests of popular machines on the market in order to give consumers objective recommendations. Their most recent report (January, 2010) compared 19 manual and semi-automatic espresso machines, priced from $170 to $1,ダウンジャケットレディース,295.
The best all-rounder was found to be the Sunbeam Café Latte, which retails for AU$329. The cheaper Sunbeam Café Espresso Stainless was deemed to be almost as good (current RRP $199).
"The really surprising thing was how well the cheaper machines performed. You really don't have to spend more than $300 to get a really good machine," says Gust.
Matthew Gee of Sydney's Barista Basics Coffee Academy, which runs coffee education courses,デュベティカアウトレット, was one of the experts that rated the machines for Choice. "The first thing we ask people is, 'Do you want to make excellent coffee?'," he says. "Most people will say yes,ダウンジャケットメンズ, but some will go down the route of buying very expensive automatic or semi-automatic machines … They offer convenience but have no place in the home if you want to make exceptional coffee."
Gee recommends a manual machine, which requires that you grind the coffee yourself and load it into what is known as the group handle. "The process is quite different from an automatic machine, where you put the coffee beans in and it grinds them internally and forms a puck that hot water is sent through to dispense the espresso. You could be using great beans but often the quality of the shot isn't that good because the technology,デュベティカ 店舗, even on the very expensive machines, often just isn't there to deliver beautiful coffee."
Besides using a manual machine,デュベティカ ダウンジャケット, Gee recommends investing in a good grinder,デュベティカ 激安, as he says that a lot of the cheaper grinders on the market chop coffee inconsistently and in large particles,デュベチカ 通販, so that water shoots through the grounds too quickly and the coffee isn't extracted properly. "It's like running it through big rocks rather than sand," he explains. He recommends the Sunbeam Café Series Conical Burr Coffee Grinder,デュベティカ 激安, the Delonghi Coffee Grinder,デュベティカ 店舗, or the Rancilio Rocky Coffee Grinder as good options.
Gee also emphasises the importance of using the freshest beans you possibly can, saying, "It's amazing using freshly roasted coffee beans versus those bought even just four weeks ago - there's a big difference in the taste and the aroma of the crema."
When it comes to which machine to buy, he recommends looking at Italian models. "They have a long history of coffee making and created the machine, so the engineering is often superior to what you'd find elsewhere."
Gee's personal top picks for great domestic machines are the Saeco Via Venezia coffee machine (RRP around AU$400) and the Rancilio Silvia (around $AU700-800). "They're not the most sexy machines on the market, which is another trap people fall into - thinking that the best machine is the one that looks best on the kitchen bench."
Finally,ダウンジャケットレディース, he (unsurprisingly) suggests that taking a coffee course can help a lot. "It's not rocket science, but you do need some basic skills. It's virtually impossible to be given or purchase a machine and make anything half decent otherwise."
Barista Basics runs coffee education courses in Sydney,デュベティカアウトレット, Melbourne and Brisbane. Or, check out their blog, Barista Brothers for explanatory videos, podcasts and articles for aspiring baristas.
What to look for when buying an espresso machineEasy to clean - Look for a streamlined design that is easy to clean, without a lot of cracks and crevices that milk and coffee can get caught in. You want one that will create a creamy froth without large air bubbles.
How to get the best coffee from your machine
Choice's experts suggest the following tips will help you get the most out of your home espresso machine,デュベティカ 大阪.
When you first get your machine home,デュベチカ 通販, flush a litre of water through it to get rid of any factory residue. Push a cup of hot water through the steam wand as well as the group handle and filter.
Once you've heated up the machine,デュベティカ ダウンジャケット, switch the pump on and see how the hot water comes out without the group handle being attached to the group head. Some machines tend to overheat the boiler, which can make the water too hot and produce too much steam,デュベチカ専売店, which can burn the coffee granules. If this is the case with your machine,デュベティカ 激安, let some water run out before making your coffee.
The standard amount of ground coffee for an espresso is 7 grams per 30ml of water. If you like your coffee stronger,デュベティカ ダウンジャケット, try increasing it to 8 or 9 grams.
When making a short black don't run more than 30ml of water through the machine as it will remove the flavour and make the coffee too bitter.
Also, use fresh water straight from the tap or bottled water without a chlorine flavour.
During the warm-up period, keep the group handle in the group head so that every part of the machine that comes into contact with the coffee gets hot.
A warm cup keeps the coffee hot,デュベティカアウトレット, which in turn keeps milk frothy. Some machines have an inbuilt cup warmer. If not, simply run hot water from the machine into your cups instead.
