British inventor with a social conscience
While perhaps less gadget-crazy as Americans, the British possess a distinguished tradition of invention. Father and son duo George and Robert Stephenson revolutionized transportation within the 1800s using their work on the steam locomotive. Within the 20th century,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], John Logie Baird (a Scot), brought us television. Recently, James Dyson developed the bagless vacuum.
Then there's Trevor Baylis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose ideas blend the commercial with the philanthropic. The self-taught Londoner's top creation up to now is his clockwork radio in 1994. Freeplay Energy Group, the South African company that markets the devices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saw $18.5 million in sales for 1998,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and expects these phones reach $50 million this year.
Sitting on the veranda of the home he built 30 years ago on Eel Pie Island in the river Thames, Mr. Baylis recalls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "The thing which inspired me to really make it was multiplication of Helps with Africa.
"A program on tv said that the only method they could stop this . was with the power of radio. But there is the issue: hardly any electricity in Africa. The only option was to use batteries, which to them were horrendously expensive - and anyway, where do you get batteries in most of those places?"
That night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Baylis says he had a dream in which he was listening to opera diva Nellie Melba "on my wind-up gramophone within the jungle.
"I then visited my shed at the back of the home where I discovered a classic dynamo, attached it to some hand brace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], connected two wires to some cheap transistor radio. After which, by holding the dynamo in one hand and rotating the handle of the hand brace, I got my first bit of sound."
Nowadays, Baylis is focusing on also try this that mixes altruism and commercial self-interest: harnessing the power generated by walking to power cell phones or palmtop computers.
His answer is a engineered shoe containing a tiny rechargeable battery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The rugged, very fit Baylis intends to put his new invention to the test in June. "I'm likely to Namibia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], walking 100 kilometers [62 miles] across the desert in order to raise money for mines awareness." (He is also working on a wind-up land-mine detector.) "We're trying to eliminate antipersonnel mines in places like Angola. The way in which we intend to get it done is to raise the money after which train the neighborhood folk to be able to cope with them.
"I decided I wanted a pair of shoes having a minigenerator on my feet in the desert, so that I can make a telephone call to all over the world."
As usual,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the concept found Baylis in the sleep. He awoke with the rule worked out, then contacted some expert the aid of an innovation technology firm.
Even without a prototype to exhibit potential investors, Baylis claims there is strong interest among shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cellphone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and palmtop computer manufacturers in great britan and also the US. Baylis says he is engaged in confidential talks, but declines to mention names.
Hugh Crodie, marketing director for Clarks, an english shoe firm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says, "The whole concept is very exciting. Using innovation and technology would certainly suit our company." Along with a spokesman for mobile-phone manufacturer Nokia says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "I am astonished by it. If it works it just sounds great."
The kid of working-class parents, Baylis was labeled backward by his teachers because he was a slow reader, and left school at least legal chronilogical age of 15.
His father persuaded him to take a low-paid traineeship inside a soil-mechanics laboratory in Southall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], near London, so he could study part-time in a local technical college. This solid grounding in civil and mechanical engineering was invaluable in the early inventions - some 200 devices to assist those with disability. Most attach everyday items for example cameras, umbrellas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and flashlights to wheelchairs or beds.
Along the way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Baylis's colorful career also included stints as an Army physical-training instructor, an expert swimmer, a movie stuntman, as well as an underwater escape artist having a Berlin circus.
His experiences developing the clockwork radio also turned Baylis into a campaigner with respect to the independent inventor. "I went round for 3 years to every British company I possibly could find and they all turned me down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he admits that.
"Then some backers arrived from South Africa. My partners made me an offer for my intellectual property, gave me a part of the money, and I'm still awaiting the balance. I'm not pleading poverty. I've got a super life. But history informs us that whenever the money rolls in, the inventor is definitely presented."
His solution ended up being to found The British Academy of Invention this past year with a select few of fellow pioneers. Its aim is to provide expert legal and commercial advice to inventors.
"You're not taught about intellectual property in school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says. "There ought to be a location where inventors can go secure knowing they will not be ripped off."
