The second full-length album by FALCHION,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hailing from the Finnish woodlands and lakes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is hitting the stores offering a blend of Melodic Death Metal sound and a scent of Folk music. The band do not absolutely come with anything innovative to the genre using greedily and unreservedly the same patterns which have already been utterly explored and exploited by their countrymen of ENSIFERUM.
Thus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], powerful juicy rhythm guitar riffs intersperse with melodic sequences made by the leading six strings and everything is backed up by a decent effort from the bass and drum department. The sound of the latter one seems occasionally to be not explicit enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though it surely enhances FALCHION抯 work with quite solid load. Generally speaking the production is more or less as it should be in this kind of music ?selective and slightly raw in order to emphasize the pagan inspirations and the musical roots. The tempo in the compositions is of various intensity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that one can experience contrasts between faster tracks like 揚rimitive Again?and slower,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet swinging moments like for instance in 揇ying Dreams?(it can be pointed out that the tempo is being altered also within particular tunes). In addition to this the listener gets a bunch of growls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which are everything but original and are never accompanied by any other forms of vocal performance. On the other hand combining harsh singing with epic one might have even stronger established the already obvious associations with ENSIFERUM.
Taking inspiration from other band抯 work is one thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but doing this without even bothering oneself about any own additions and producing imitative boring stuff is a completely different pair of shoes. Listening to FALCHION I simply get a feeling as if I were facing compositions which were to poor to be put on ENSIFERUM抯 regular works. If only the tunes made by the group were more catchy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more diversified as far as the riff structures are concerned,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more absorbing and lively,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bearing a load of sheer energy and flowing easily through my head I am sure I would not complain about the band抯 unoriginal way of playing.
All the way through 揅hronicles Of The Dead?there is nearly no fragment which could be praised. Some sort of the light at the end of the tunnel appears in the closing tune which includes quite nice acoustic Folk melodies among which the opening leitmotiv is for me the best one on the background of the whole release.
