Compensation for Division I men's basketball coaches
The average coaching salary at the 65 schools that reached the 2009 NCAA tournament is nearly $1.3 million, excluding benefits, perks and incentives, based on a USA TODAY study of contracts. But the conference makes a difference. Coaches from the power leagues the Chesapeake bay,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pacific-10 and Southeastern earn nearly $1.9 million normally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], five times a lot more than coaches within the other conferences.
Methodology:
To look for the total pay packages of NCAA tournament coaches, USA TODAY requested all forms of 2009-10 season compensation for that head men's basketball coach and/or acquired the school's federal taxes or any other state disclosure data.
USA TODAY obtained a minimum of some good info on all but five schools, which are private. In cases where an outside income report is unavailable, a coach's salary may be undercounted by $200,000-$500,000 or even more for the reason that category alone.
Schools that provided contract information were given the chance to review their figures.
A not available (NA) within the chart denotes schools which are private or didn't release the information or schools whose coaches are new and had not filed some other income report. A $0 means either the coach does not get compensation from that activity/source or it's found in another category and also the documentation didn't break it down.
USA TODAY was have helped its data collection and analysis by students from the Indiana University School of Journalism's National Sports Journalism Center, led by center director Timothy A. Franklin and adjunct professor Robyn Schuster.
Explanations
of compensation categories:
Guaranteed income: Includes base salary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], annualized deferred payments, annuities and contractual expense accounts (most coaches have expenses covered per university policy; a few have set amounts. In the few cases when it applies, housing allowances are treated as expense accounts.) It also includes television, radio, Internet deals; apparel contracts, pr, camps and other income the university guarantees. Incentive payments, bonuses and benefits aren't included.
Non-guaranteed income: Includes any athletically related income earned by the coach externally the university. It may include a shoe/apparel contract that goes directly to the coach, speeches, camps or other money sources the university doesn't guarantee, such as foundations. In some instances, this may change from year upon year.
Annual total: Guaranteed and non-guaranteed income combined. It reflects what the coach earned previously year, whatever the source. Bonuses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one-time payments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the need for tickets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], luxury suites, cars, travel, country club memberships and standard university benefits for example health care and standard retirement aren't included.
One-time bonuses: Additional amounts paid, or scheduled to be paid over the life of the contract. Covers signing bonuses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], conditional/deferred payments for example those for fulfilling portions of contracts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also called longevity payments, and other specially designated amounts but not performance bonuses.
Tournament max: Amount the coach can cumulatively earn based on his team's performance within the NCAA tournament. (Most private schools are organized as tax-exempt organizations, which are necessary to file each year with the IRS. The return lists the organization's highest-paid employees. At some public schools, the athletic department or a support organization is also organized like a non-profit. USA TODAY used the newest filing available, most covering a monetary year ending in spring or summer 2008. The return includes all income paid through the school or support organization, including benefits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perks and bonuses that may happen to be earned; the return does not break up those figures by income category. It does not include income paid by other sources.)
Bonuses awarded on discretionary basis not included.
Macon served as interim head coach this year.
College: Skinner was fired March 30.
Information in the federal tax return includes Williams' salary as an assistant coach for the majority of the fiscal year and his salary as head coach from his promotion in April 2008 through June 30, 2008.
State: Bonus depending on 10% of net gain from any postseason payout.
Iowa: Reflects Jacobson's new contract signed in March, although not yet available.
McCaffery resigned to consider a job at Iowa on March 28,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Details are from report for fiscal 2008 essental to Pennsylvania's Right-to-Know Law.
