decorating girls' rooms
When we moved to our current home, I completely re-did our girls' rooms. I'm anti theme of anything - my girls' nurseries were in muted colors without any kind of baby theme.
For their current rooms, they both have the same decor, but different colors. My ODD's room is done in black and bright green. My YDD's room is done in pink and black. My MIL made the entire set for both of their rooms - curtains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], duvet, pillows, tapestry on the wall, and bed skirt. Their rooms are very put together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], way more so than my own room.
It's not a trend that I'm following - it's something I simply did. I purposely don't do baby/young girl themes, because I'm not re-doing their room every 5 years. This is it for a while. The room will go through each stage of life. without having to be re-done in fear of being too "baby'ish". And really - it's for a selfish reason. I simply cannot stand Disney themed anything for a room, nor would I want anything in their room that will be a thing of the past in less than a year. No princess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no Disney,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no baby colors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.
And speaking of boys - my son (15 mths old) has a room decorated in taupe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], periwinkle blue (not a fan), and a maroon/red color. I have vintage art work on the wall that shows a football, a soccer ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a basketball, etc (think muted 1920's colors/look). I have word art on the wall that is a famous Vince Lombardi quote (will to win.). It's been this way since before he was born - again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], keeping with the anti-theme of no baby stuff and something that he can live with for several years.
And, I do run the risk of him being anti-sport Smile We'll re-decorate if that happens.
SD had Dora room when I first met her and then we changed it to Princesses and it was that until she was about 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then it changed to Littlest Pet Shop and now we have it kinda retro looking. Her walls are brown and her bedset is brown with hot pink,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bright orange,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blue and green circles on the comforter. Her walls are light purple and light yellow. The yellow walls still have LSU logos on them and the purple walls have her butterflies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flowers and dragonflies on them. I haven't been able to bring myself to change her paint or decals yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that's staying the same. Her bedding is now Dora.
My girls have cute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], well put together rooms. Nothing fancy but definitely "done" and the most magazine worthy rooms in the house (when they are clean and uncluttered - never!) The master bedroom need new everything but won't get a makeover for several years at least. Why do the girls rooms look good? Well they started from zero so they needed done and there is a ton of inexpensive ways to decorate a girls (or boys too I guess) room to make it look great. My 8 year olds has bright stripes of 2 shades if pinks and greens on the bottom half of walls - and we did a nice thick chair rail and molding. Took forever but very cheap. My other daughter has wainscoting on bottom and painted top- same thing - took a while but cheap. Her bedding is a target quilt that is a pbk knock off.
Anyway it's not the glamour stuff I think you were talking about but my 8 y/o would love that and I bet it could be done on a bargain.
