Does It Help Or Hinder Their Self Esteem
Being able to find "plus size" clothing for kids may make parents' lives easier in the shopping realm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but is the term detrimental to children's self esteem?
That's the question that the "Today" show posed yesterday during a segment highlighting increased availability of plus sizes for kids. While plus sizes for adults have been de rigueur in the fashion world for quite some time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only recently have so many young children been in the market for roomier clothes -- and stores are definitely cashing in.
Sears, home of the Kardashian plus-sized denim line, has the "Pretty Plus" line for girls ages 7 to 12. The clothes are the exact same ones available in the regular sizes and they're also displayed in the same area. But does that wipe away the stigma that some associate with having to buy special sizes? Jene Luciani,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a mother to a 2-year-old daughter that veers on the tall side,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seems to think that the label is still problematic:
"A child being able to have the same clothes that everyone else their age is wearing is a great thing. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you're attaching a label to it like 'plus-size' and this child is seeing that from an early age. Will they feel like they're still different from everyone else?"
Gap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Old Navy and The Children's Place all offer plus-sized clothing for girls as young as three, but,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to "Today," the term "plus" is merely how retailers recognize roomier sizes. As the industry term has clearly entered the mainstream and more and more children are looking for age appropriate clothes for their body shape, the discussion has moved from fit to psyche. Some parents and industry insiders even wonder if "plus size" is the right term at all when it comes to kids' clothes.
"I don't really enjoy the word 'plus.' I'd rather them just put numbers like they do for other kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Morgan Joseph,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an 11-year-old who struggles to find fashionable, age appropriate clothes at 5 foot 11 inches.
The need for expanded waistlines and roomier fits aren't just a national one. UK schoolchildren are also needing bigger sizes to be made to accomodate larger frames. But with the existence of plus-size Barbies and the increasing prevalence of plus-size models (Robyn Lawley is quickly becoming our new favorite), we hope that the fashion industry continues to provide more easily-accessible larger clothing options and that kids will shift their focus away from body image issues.
Do you think the term "plus size" for kids is appropriate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Should the industry adopt a new way to deal with this growing market,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?

HuffPost High School welcomes a lively, thoughtful debate in the comment section. I knew it was weird that I couldn't get clothes from the same place that my little friends did,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but in the end my clothes were nicer and there was no chance that some other little girl would show up in the same dress. Back then Lane Bryant was a nice store that carried many different and popular brands and had different departments for women with various size issues. When I started working I shopped in their tall department. Then they sold out to Lerner and since then all they carry is cheap junk for teens and twenties. I still go there now and then but usually leave empty-handed. Things are much better in the large-sized world of shopping nowadays and I don't mind having to go to the special floor of the department store to find "women's" clothing but for young kids it's nice to have all sizes together. I learned at an early age to shop alone because no one else went to my section of the store. My wardrobe consisted of elastic sweat pants and tee shirts from Walmart. Department stores offered nothing. As a still chubby teen, my clothing came from the women's department, and I was humiliated to wear the same clothes as my teachers. At 15, I can still remember a particularly bad day of shopping, when at the end I found a jcpenny with a new juniors plus section. I cried with joy, and my mother cried when I emptied her checking account. My self esteem grew,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and within 6 months I had lost 50 pounds. I didn't care what they were called, I was glad they were available.
