Nuala Cox nee O'Donnell
Parklands and James Street, Westport
The death took place peacefully at St. Brendan's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mulranny on Oct 3, 2012 of Nuala Cox of Westport. She was a much-loved and highly-respected figure in the community and she was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1970. Formerly Nuala O'Donnell, she was 91 years old. Daughter of the late Martin Hugh O'Donnell and Bridget (Beecy) Lyons of the Colony,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Louisburgh, Nuala was born in Kilmeena on January 4, 1921.
She was the fifth-born in a family of eleven and had a happy time growing up in a large household of siblings which swelled every summer with cousins and friends from Louisburgh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Leenane and Dublin. Her father, also known as MH taught in Rossduane National School and it was here that Nuala received her formative education. She went to secondary school to the Presentation Convent in Tuam but left when she was fifteen having contracted TB. On recovering from her illness she completed her education in the Sacred Heart School in Westport and subsequently got a job in the shoe factory in town.
She emigrated to the US in 1952, arriving initially in New York to her uncle Manus and aunt Agnes in Brooklyn, but after a while she secured a good job in Westport, Connecticut with a Miss Farrell. Her job consisted of looking after this wealthy lady who was writing her memoirs and needed some assistance. So Nuala, the self-taught two-fingered typist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], helped her to type up her book. While there she also learned how to drive. When she returned to Westport she was one of the first lady drivers in the town. She never forgot her instructor's words; "never loiter at an intersection" and indeed Nuala never loitered anywhere. She never walked - she was always in a hurry and she was known by her step in the hall or on the side walk. She was highly regarded by Miss Farrell and she enjoyed her time there. She also visited her sister Kathleen in Texas, her brother Brendan, who arrived in US shortly after her, and her many cousins, relatives and friends but she was more than happy to return to Ireland in 1956.
She was always a lady who dressed elegantly and was particularly fond of the stiletto heels. In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when she would visit her sisters in the convent she always had to take off her shoes - the sign "no stilettos please" was written for her! She had a great sense of style and fashion and always had great pride in her appearance and her regular trips to her hairdresser in Cong were a testament to this.
In April 1957 she married the love of her life, Jim Cox from Mayour, Kilmeena. The ceremony was performed in the school as Myna Church was being built at the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coincidentally by the firm which her new husband was part of,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cox, Walkin and Cox. They set up home in a small flat over Cox's Western Hardware on Bridge Street and it was always a port of call for anyone visiting Westport. They would be sure of a joyous welcome and a visit at Christmas time to see the ceiling-hugging Christmas tree was an event in itself. They lived very happily here and they loved films and visiting the cinema as often as time and money allowed. Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter and she supported him in these pursuits with pride and joy, celebrating his many triumphs along the way.
Nuala worked as a secretary for Cox, Walkin and Cox having taught herself both shorthand and typing. Nobody could read her shorthand or indeed her handwriting - but she was the best and fastest two fingered typist in the business. She worked first in Distillery Road where people have a wonderful memory of her doing the hula hoop in the yard - the only one on site able to do so. She subsequently worked in the office in the Western Hardware as well as attending to bar and hardware shop duties when the need arose, and later on her office moved to the old church on the Mall, which is now a restaurant.
They were a very happy and devoted couple and Nuala was devastated when her beloved Jim died suddenly in February 1970 at the age of 52. They had been married less than 13 years and had not been blessed with children. Although heartbroken and desolate, she continued to work and in the winter of that year started a tradition of providing a home-cooked lunch for her nieces and nephews who were attending secondary school in Westport. This tradition continued from 1970 until she finished by providing lunch for her two grandnephews in 2001. She was very close to her nieces and nephews and was always interested in their lives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], encouraging of their activities and proud of their achievements.
Nuala was a lady of tremendous warmth and her hospitality was legendary. She always operated an open house policy and when she moved to James Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Westport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in 1982 all the family and indeed half the town had keys to her house! Whether she was there or not everyone was welcome. Her generosity was boundless - whenever help was needed Nuala was there. She gave unstintingly of her time to those in need. Over the years her family remember her looking after people who had no one else - she minded a lady in Kelly's Flats as if she were her own mother and there are numerous other examples of her visiting the ill and the housebound. Another great example of her generosity was her car - she gave it to anyone who asked for or needed it and when her sisters were home on holiday she gave it to them for their use during their stay.
Nuala was slight in stature and had very brittle bones. On one occasion while on holiday a friend of Jim's hugged her and broke three of her ribs. Each summer Jim and Nuala took their holidays in a caravan at the Clapper Bridges in "the Colony" outside Louisburgh, close to her mother's birthplace. She loved visiting "the west" and had a great affinity for places such as Accony and Askelane and loved nothing better than catching up with the relations while Jim fished. The stories of the summers there are legendary with Jim passing the time fishing and Nuala cooking his catch fresh each day. Nuala was something of a trend-setter and was one of the first ladies of her time to introduce the concept of wearing slacks while on holiday as distinct from the wearing of skirts in the office. This fashion trend and her driving skills were a few of the many things she brought back home from her time in the US.
Nuala was passionate about crosswords, watching TV, reading, playing scrabble and knitting. She was a particularly voracious reader and could, at any one time have six books on loan from the local library. When one of her nieces tried to join the library, she was electrified to discover that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not only was she already a member, she owed money on overdue books! Aunty Nuala had hijacked her name. Indeed such was her interest in reading that the library staff sometimes found it difficult to meet her demands! She had an active and fertile mind, kept alive by daily editions of Countdown and games of scrabble with her nieces,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nephews, or anyone else that could be cajoled into a game. She was never idle - she was always knitting. Known for her style and elegance she designed and knit her own distinctive cardigans and jumpers for half the world but never used a pattern. She is however best known for her socks for all sizes. While she did knit the usual white Aran socks for some conservative souls she also knitted the multicoloured ones using up old wool.
Nuala was a person of very deep faith, a devout Catholic who attended morning Mass every day she was able, said her Rosary every night and was a lifelong member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. She gave generously of her time to church events and took great pride in decorating her window in Westport for the Corpus Christi procession. She was a devoted and loving sister, aunt, grand-aunt, godmother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], neighbour and friend. She loved family gatherings, reunions and sing songs and she herself was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. She wrote regularly to her siblings who were overseas and later on her overseas nieces and nephews looked forward to her regular newsy letters with great anticipation.
Nuala moved from James Street to Parklands in 2001. However her time there was to be short-lived as ill health deemed her final years were spent in the loving care of the staff at St Brendan's in Mulranny. While not having any family of her own and losing her husband at a young age, Nuala had many friends and was much loved by her nieces, nephews,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cousins and extended family. The affection people had for Nuala was borne out by the large number of visitors she had over the last ten years of her life in St. Brendan's. For those living away from the area, any visit to the west was only considered complete when they had been to Mulranny to see Nuala. For those living locally it was great to be able to visit her regularly as a small gesture of thanks for all of the kindness she had shown to so many people over the years.
She was predeceased by her sisters Maureen (who died aged five years), Mary (Sr Aquin). Portarlington who died in 1948, Alice Quinn (Kilmeena) who died in 2001, Grace who died in Westport in 2010 and by her brother Hugh (Galway) who died in 2002 and her brother Mick (Kilmeena) who died in 2011. She will be very sadly missed by her sisters Brigid Higgins (Birmingham), Sr Brendan (Texas) and Sr Róisín (New Zealand), her sisters-in-law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and a large circle of friends.
Nuala was waked in the family home in Kilmeena and was removed to St Brendan's Church Myna. Her remains were received by Fr Jim Walsh, assisted by Fr Michéal MacGreíl. Her Funeral Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Jim Walsh, Fr Michéal MacGreíl, Fr. Atty Devine and Fr. Vincent Jones from New Zealand. After the Funeral Mass, Nuala was laid to rest with her beloved Jim in the new cemetery in Kilmeena.
She was a wonderful friend, sister, aunt and grandaunt, and while she had reached a great age, she will be sadly missed by all. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
