On fighting in mufti
As we all know, kung fu masters wear colourful silks, ninjas wear ninja costumes, and karateka wear a white gi, a coloured belt and no footwear. Exactly what does your average thug or mugger wear? Comfortable, perhaps fashionable clothing, something that won't draw an excessive amount of attention. Not to mention some type of trainers or boots or whatever. Let's consider this as it were.
When threatened with violence, many people would consider removing their galoshes a flawed course of action, indeed to many people such a notion would completely neglect to occur. This is sensible. For one thing, while man might have marched the terra firma discalced for countless aeons before nike came along, mother earth's skin aint as soft as once it was with no amount of natural aloe-vera is going to help. We have paved gaia and must now accept the effects of our actions.
And then we aren't likely to be taking our shoes off. But exactly what does this mean in terms of our mad unarmed combat skills? Will this affect our kicking? Or our balance? In a nutshell yes company. Company to some lot more questions that haven't been asked yet. Adding footwear to some trained martial artist includes a large number of effects, which on first sight might seem to become negative. But let's ignore footwear as it were and consider the results of your everyday clothing.
The main problem with 'normal' clothes may be the sheer selection of different characteristics. Some clothes are heavy, some light, some loose, tight, restrictive, noisy, vulnerable to electrostatic buildup, expensive, hot - other great tales as well as on. There are three approaches when i view it:
Choose clothes with care
Learn to fight within the clothes you typically wear
Avoid fighting when your clothes hinder you excessively
Obviously, the third approach is always preferable, but dedication to avoidance is not preparedness so let's consider the first option. Choosing your clothes is a no brainer - you want to wrap yourself in clothing similar to that in which you train. Gi trousers are often baggy and unrestrictive (particularly round the crotch region) which means you should try to locate these qualities inside your normal trousers. (That's pants to you yanks. baggy pants within the british lexicon means something entirely too silly to think about.) Similarly, trousers ought to be light, but strong. These qualities can be pretty simple to come across for street wear but it may be a little harder to obtain a suit tailored this way - it would probably look just a little odd.
For the torso, again exactly the same principles apply - you would like unrestrictive, light and strong articles, preferably only possible. Don't go so much for the baggy stuff here, contrary you need to keep your arms clear, but when you have to wear sleeves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], attempt to wear something as light as possible, fairly close fitting and preferably in some manner elasticated. Unfortunately here's where suits really suck. Suit shirts (particularly cheap ones) is often very restrictive - they're just not designed for this stuff. Try and find one that's at ease with movement, or ask your tailor to help you find one that's less restrictive - you can state that you've sensitive skin and do not like restrictive clothes - you don't have to say "make me a shirt for kicking ass in". If you need to wear a suit jacket on the top then so whether it is. Try and acquire one that you can take off quickly. Firstly it's much harder to battle whilst putting it on, secondly it could get ripped or alternatively, if you are not so fussed concerning the jacket then you may use it as a weapon (provided you have some clue in regards to what you're doing). If you have to wear a tie then get a clip-on one which you will soon remove. As for women's clothing, skirts can be quite restrictive, not just in kicking, but additionally to general stance and balance. Looser skirts or dresses are better, but you may not especially want to kick someone within the head if you are wearing a dress. Women's clothing is generally designed much more from the fashion perspective than men's clothing, and balancing practicality and style can be very difficult.
The second approach - understanding how to fight within the clothes you typically wear - is worthy of some attention. In a nutshell, make an effort to to at the minimum evaluate how a particular get-up affects your movements. If you were in a position to choose your clothing as directed above then you'll find your movements less restricted. You should try to see which moves in particular are more affected. For instance, you will likely realize that kicking above waist height doesn't seem possible in suit trousers or jeans.
Evaluate your clothing for disadvantages, for example, ties or scarves can be used by your assailant against you. Many ensembles may be unsuitable for scrapping, but can be made 'fight-ready' via some simple modifications. For example, a loose suit jacket can be quickly slipped from the shoulders, a clip-on tie can be detatched easily, short-skirts can be hiked up a little to become bit less restrictive (with a bit of luck your assailant may be temporarily distracted by this action. especially if you are a man).
Most important of all is that your arms are relatively free. Whilst your legs are stronger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your arms and hands are your primary weapons and defence. No matter if you are a Karateka or perhaps a wrestler,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll need your arms. Practice punches, blocks and locks (or whatever you're adept with). Identify weakened moves and only adjust your clothing or learn to use other techniques in their stead.
Finally, shoes along with other footwear. Firstly, it ought to be obvious that the rules above apply straight to shoes because they do to clothing. However I've chose to make this another section because footwear mustn't be overlooked. If you do nothing else, you should consider your footwear. Why? Simple. Since you need your feet to operate like feet. Not stumps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wheels, stilts, roots or pogo sticks. If you cannot run inside your shoes then you definitely can't fight in them either. It's that simple. Your feet are the interface using the ground, and when they fail you are in big trouble. Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as we all know, most women's footwear is utterly unsuitable for actually moving about in. Ladies you've two choices:
Ditch the heels
Get quick release footwear
The best footwear for fighting in is what is as close as you possibly can to no shoes whatsoever. This doesn't mean less material, it simply means less deviation from feet. Light trainers - good. Simple, comfortable shoes - ok. Good boots - variable, usually ok but see later. Sandles - bad. Heels - bad. Platforms - bad. Stilletos - don't be silly.
Boots could be ok provided they are not too far removed from basic army or walking boot format. Goth boots are usually just too damn heavy. They'll anchor you to the ground ok, but if you stumble, or try to kick, or need to run you are in trouble.
If you need to wear something inappropriate make sure they come off fast. Yes that entails you'll be barefoot, but grazed feet is preferable to broken ankles. Better still there's actually an upside. stilletos make fearsome weapons! Whip em off, grab one (lift your foot to your hand, don't stoop or you will get rushed) and then assume the position. If your would-be assailant has become facing a 3 inch steel point they might possess a sudden change of heart.
If you're wearing goth boots then try to assume a solid stance and do not move from this unless utterly necessary. Bear in mind that you are able to still work low kicks and grinds together with your foot-armour at close range. Also you're not as likely to obtain your legs kicked out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Knee strikes can also be effective and when they come up fast the extra weight will prove to add considerable momentum (but of course be harder and slower to lift),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Tall platform goth boots are simply dangerous and should be avoided no matter what. They create you unstable and should not be removed quickly.
You can get martial arts training shoes with specially molded 'pivot points' and so forth on the sole. These are obviously ideal for fighting in, but might look just a little weird should you wear them out and about. It might be seen as premeditation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and, along with a particularly effective win, (ie you hospitalise unhealthy guy) might make things go very badly for you within the courts.
Whatever footwear you get wearing, try to look for time to practice in them. If kicks are impractical don't worry too much about that, but make sure you can hop and jump about as you may expect to inside a fight. Try runnning inside them. You will be surprised how tiring slightly added weight could be. Few martial arts schools will help you to train inside your day to day pumps - this is usually for insurance reasons - so you will need to practice in your own home. For those who have a like-minded friend you'll be able to interact. Just remember to warm up and stretch properly in advance. Yes I understand, inside a real situation you will not are able to complete lunges before you knock heads, but at that time you'll be pumped with adrenalin and won't notice your torn hamstrings before next morning. Also, take it slowly, starting point. Shoes grip the floor differently to your feet, and you lack the a feeling of contact with the ground. Balance is going to be affected, and it's easy to damage your ankles if you don't be mindful. Focus on a variety of surfaces - wood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], soil,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grass, concrete etc.
One last point: There's no substitue for practice, and unfortunately for you personally, your assailant is liable to possess had a lot more practice fighting in the street clothes. What's more he'll be dressed for that occasion, and may even possess a few tricks up his sleeves should things start going badly for him. Be cautious. Avoid fighting should you are able to. A great anti-mugging tip would be to keep all your old charge cards and buy a cheap wallet. Fill it with the old cards contributing to ten quid (twenty dollars) or so, along with a bit of change, and carry it in your opposite pocket. Firstly if anyone threatens you and also requests your wallet you can provide them with the 'fake' one - they're going away happy and also you don't lose your important stuff. Secondly it means you always have some spare change for emergencies. Always throw the wallet over and do not seem to be looking way too hard in the attacker because they may attack you if you 'see too much'. But always expect the attack. Just know it's coming, and become ready to defend and retaliate. And if you have to retaliate then do a sufficient job - don't allow them counter-retaliate or that may be the end of you. (Don't kill them though, or you'll visit jail. Fun this isn't it?).
