only grief in another Minneapolis teen's death,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The latest teenager claimed by the violence plaguing Minneapolis this year was described Saturday by his sister as a "gentle giant" who recently told her he was changing his life because he was tired of seeing his friends die,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Despite his efforts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cedric Renard (Loc) Hunter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 18, didn't make it. Late Friday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was gunned down while walking to his sister's north Minneapolis home, the city's 21st homicide victim of the year.
"We just had a conversation, [and] he said, 'That's the reason I don't hang out with my friends anymore,' he was tired of everyone dying around him," said Lashaya Jackson, one of Hunter's four sisters, on Saturday as she worked on a makeshift memorial near the spot where he was killed in the 4800 block of Aldrich Avenue N.
"We're just hearing little stories and stuff about what may have happened," she said. Friday on a report of gunfire found Hunter lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.
As of Saturday evening, there had been no arrests. Police have not said whether the shooting was gang-related.
Jackson said her brother had been released from a juvenile facility in March after serving about a year on an armed robbery conviction. Court records also show he pleaded guilty in October 2008 to possession of a pistol with a previous violent crime conviction.
Since his release,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he had been working toward his GED and keeping in contact with his probation officer, his sister said. She said he had friends, but was a loner who preferred to walk everywhere.
Hunter was 6 feet 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and because of his imposing size, some people were afraid of him, she said, but he never caused trouble.
"I've never heard someone say, 'I wanna kill Loci,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' or 'I want to fight Loci,' ever," she said. She said she believes the shooting was either random or a case of mistaken identity.
Jackson last saw her brother around Wednesday, when he left to spend time with a girl. Family members had spoken to him Friday night and urged him to come to the family home just a few blocks away from where he was shot. He had called repeatedly Friday night to say, "I'm coming, Sis," Jackson said, but he never made it.
Two hours after his final call,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the news spreading through the neighborhood about the shooting reached Hunter's family. Jackson called his cell phone, and when police answered, she knew for certain what had happened.
Hunter's death was the week's second homicide. On Monday night, Derrick Martin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 20,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was shot to death in an ambush along a Lake Calhoun bike path. Police said he was the latest victim in a gang war.
In just five months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 21 homicides in Minneapolis have exceeded the 19 in all of 2009.
Notes to 'Loc,' lost forever
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, friends and family members gathered at the memorial site,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some already wearing T-shirts emblazoned with Hunter's image. Jackson and her 2-year-old son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Damauri, decorated a tree with balloons, flowers and a placard bearing friends' signatures. She placed a pair of her brother's Converse sneakers at the base of the tree. Every note was addressed to "Loc," a nickname Hunter earned as a little boy when he had trouble spelling his first name.
Damauri played nearby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too young to understand what had happened.
A man joined Jackson and began to place a bottle of Usher cologne between the sneakers. The scent, so reminiscent of the brother Jackson will never see again, hung in the air.
