Rail industry targeted for coal pollution
SEATTLE,prada outlet online, June 6 () -- The U.S. railroad industry isn't doing its part to keep pollution from the coal industry at bay, the Sierra Club and its allies said in Seattle. The Sierra Club and regional allies said in April it sent a 60-day notice to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. and the coal industry that it may file a lawsuit over pollution tied to coal. The advocacy group said it found evidence BNSF was tied to coal pollution in Washington waterways. The Sierra Club pointed to BNSF evidence that suggested as much as 3,the north face sale,500 pounds of coal dust was lost per rail car per average trip. The group notes BNSF doesn't have the necessary permits to discharge pollutants into U.S. waters and has filed a lawsuit against the company in Seattle federal court."BNSF and the other coal shippers had two months to figure out a way to stop polluting our waterways and communities with coal dust but they chose to do nothing to find a solution," Sierra Club campaigner Cesia Kearns said in a statement Wednesday. There was no public comment about the lawsuit issued by BNSF. The company in April said rail in general was a cleaner form of freight transportation than trucking. The Association of American Railroads reports coal shipments by rail were down more than 5 percent for the week that ended May 25 when compared to the same time last year.
