suffering Maple Leaf fans may finally have reached their limit
Kudos are due those Maple Leaf fans who finally spoke up. No, seriously. It appears many have reached the breaking point.
The customers at the Air Canada Centre who last month chanted Wilson, in recognition of tasks undone by former coach Ron, were quickly rewarded. A few days later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Wilson was gone because his good friend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], general manager Brian Burke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], deemed it cruel and unusual punishment for him to hear that particular music again.
It brought to mind earlier direct action inspired by a local crowd, namely the Want Beer serenades from Blue Jay fans, back in their baby-steps days, directed at then-Ontario premier Bill Davis. There was no escaping them. Eventually, the province got around to it but it took FIVE YEARS, the first tap not turned on until 1982.
The Leaf folks got much faster action and perhaps emboldened by that success,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a portion of the clientele has began directing its displeasure at the GM,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has failed to deliver on enough of his blowhard vows and, almost 3 years along,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has provided a team closer to last place than the playoffs.
Without knowing whether it was repeated Saturday night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or will be in the future, the Burke choir clearly is gaining members these days.
Historically, this is not a fan base known for rabid demands. Sure, they would on occasion boo players out of town, like Larry Murphy how did that one work out? but grumbling acceptance of the status quo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however lousy it might be, has been the hallmark of the Leaf customers for a long time. The championship drought since 1967 is embarrassing enough, but for by far the NHL's richest franchise to possess the longest streak in the league for not reaching the playoffs, which happens if Florida makes it this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is downright humiliating.
Yet the fans keep coming, buying the overpriced beers and the jerseys and the condos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course and staying loyal to the logo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however many times it is changed to sell more shirts. This phenomenon is viewed as both a positive and a negative, depending on how one interprets cause and effect. But that argument aside, until now the fans hadn't stood up and directly caused anyone to be fired.
Did anyone lead chants against John Ferguson Jr.? Or Paul Maurice? Cliff Fletcher? Didn't happen, or not that these ears ever heard. Everybody in sports reaches the end of his shelf life sooner or later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but this is the first time the locals have been so vocal about demanding its immediate arrival.
What does this mean? Just that they have broken new ground here and that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps, they finally have reached their breaking point with this club.
Something similar went down earlier this week in the NBA, where Golden State Warriors fans went completely crazy at their (relatively new) owner at a halftime jersey-retirement tribute to Chris Mullin, one of their former stars. Owner Joe Lacob took the microphone and was instantly drowned out with boos and vicious heckles. Fans wouldn't stop even after both Mullin and Rick Barry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another former icon, begged them to.
This was a loud and very loyal fan base's way of registering disgust with the trade of scoring star Monta Ellis and the tanking of yet another season. The fans crossed a line they had never crossed here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even if it meant scarring a hero's tribute. They'd obviously found their breaking point and whatever relationship Lacob has with his customers surely has been skewed forever.
