The Best Sole For Women's Waterproof Hiking Boots
When most people think about the sole of a boot, they envision a leather sole of about 1/4 of an inch with stitches in it that connect the sole to the upper part of the boot. That the way it was done for literally hundreds of years.
First, the soles were made of tough leather which would be hard enough to keep the feet from feeling every little dimple in the path, and they were sewn on by hand by cobblers. That must have been a pretty tough job for its time. They weren the most comfortable boots in the world but they were usually considered better than just soft leather skins for soles.
In those days there were no "special" boots for people with unusual fits or foot shapes. All boots and shoes were made the same and a person just had to try on many different boots until they found some that fit them the best.
Then came the innovation of standardized shoe and boot sizes. This made finding the proper pair of boots a bit easier but if a person had unusual feet, they had to be specially made by the village cobbler and this was a very expensive proposition. Still, the boot soles were made of flexible but tough leather. Some boots were better than others and absolutely none of them were water proof or even water resistant, for that matter and they were still being stitched, individually, by hand.
Time passed with little change, then, after the invention of the sewing machine, further innovation introduced the world to the more durable sewing machines that would sew leather products. This was a huge step in the mass production of shoes and boots but it did nothing to improve the water resistance of the boots.
The main reason that boots were not waterproof is because of the stitching itself. There was not and still is not any type of stitch that so tightly joins the soles with the uppers that no water can seep through into the inner boot. Sure, there are modern stitching processes that do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], indeed, make boots water "resistant" for a few seconds. However, just try crossing a stream that is perhaps 30 feet across with boots that are stitched as tight as any boot you can find and there is a great possibility that you will have wet feet after you get across. They may not be soaked but there will be water inside the boots.
If some type of water resistant spray is applied to them such as silicone, the 30 foot crossing "might" be a dry one. If, however, you have to walk very far in wet ground or mud, for any length of time, you wind up with a moist inner boot.
Again, for many years this was the standard for waterproof hiking boots. Then came rubber. After latex was discovered and it was determined that it could be molded into many things, boot and shoe soles began to show up, made of particular types of rubber.
In the early days of rubber soles, the soles were attached to the uppers by,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you guessed it, stitches. That right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the rubber soles were sewn on to the uppers, however this stitching action compressed the rubber and made the boot a bit more water resistant, if done correctly.
As various new types of rubber were discovered and put to use, one of the mixtures, they found,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was both more durable and had excellent grip properties, thus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new type of sole was added to the uppers. Stitching was proving to be inadequate for waterproofing. Everything was still water resistant, but if left in water for any significant time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the soles would leak and this was unacceptable.
Eventually, the secret was discovered. It was found that a particular type of rubber cement, when cured correctly, would hold rubber soles to leather uppers for long periods of time.
Eventually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as time passed, both the rubber cement and the methods for producing it improved vastly.
Today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most high quality hiking boots are made with thick, hard rubber soles that are glued or cemented onto the uppers with a very strong and durable high polymer cement that is very strong.
The nice thing about these new hard rubber soles is that, though they will eventually begin to part from the leather uppers over a long period of time and many, many miles of foot travel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can be re-cemented back onto the leather or tough fabric uppers with several types of glues that can be purchased over-the-counter.
Most extreme high quality women waterproof hiking boots can be found with soles that are made of high impact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thick rubber. The current leading manufacturer of such hiking boot soles is Vibram.
If you look at practically any hiking boot that is worthwhile, it will have some model of Vibram sole on it.
Here how to tell if you got good hiking boot soles: Take the boot and hold it out in front of you with one of your hands on the end of the toes and the other on the end of the heel area. Now, try to bend the toe end of the sole upwards as hard as you can. If the sole flexes and bends up easily, you do not have a quality hiking boot sole. Put the boot up and continue searching. You may as well search for a boot with a Vibram sole because you know it of high quality. If, when you try to bend the toe up, you find it almost impossible, you may have a good sole on your boot.
Why do hiking boots need tough, thick soles instead of nice cushy soft ones?
The reason for hiking boot soles is because as you take long hikes, the bottoms of your feet take the constant punishment of the road or path. After a certain distance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your feet begin to become very sensitive and you start to feel every tiny pebble, stick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rock or stone that you step on. This is a good reason for you to also make sure you have some excellent foot beds in your boots.
On any decently lengthy hike, your feet will betray you after a while. If you have soft boot soles, they may become bruised and very, very sore, almost to the point of your feeling crippled to a certain extend because it very difficult to walk on painful feet.
If you have good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tough, thick hard rubber soles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your feet will not become sensitive and painful. You will last longer on the path and the hiking excursion will be much more enjoyable.
So, when you are shopping for a pair of really high quality waterproof hiking boots, look for thick, tough, hard rubber soles and the best ones are made by Vibram.相关的主题文章:
