Soon, the bow ties will be exhibited in the Melbourne Museum. This is ideal. It further boosts his whole entomological theory about them. The classic museum exhibit, after all, is a collection of butterflies arranged neatly in a glass cabinet.

Groves' bow ties will be exhibited as part of the Community Collections program, which begins next month. It's part of the Museum's 150th anniversary celebrations. Each collection will be displayed according to the collector's wishes. The collectors themselves - an eccentric, idiosyncratic bunch, in the main, and by nature slightly obsessive - will host their hoardings in person and address Museum visitors about what their particular "thing" means.

Collecting isn't about looking at one, it's about looking at 100. It's the collection that matters.

This should come as no surprise. Everyone knows architects love bow ties.
Groves collects clip-on bow ties only, however; the more kitsch version of the tie-up bow tie. He has encountered some snobbery to do with this, which only spurred him on.
Groves considers clip-ons cool, however, especially for an architect. "The whole notion of something clipped on is very architectural, especially from that era. There was that industrial, clip-on aesthetic.

But then again, he says "architects fancy themselves as being fashionable and flamboyant and a little bit quirky perhaps, so it was the traditional attire." Not so much these days though, he adds. Young architects seem to favour a uniform of basic black. Often with a skivvy and shaved head.
Groves is a senior lecturer in architecture at the University of Melbourne. He has written books on feng shui, letterboxes, Chinese temples and television. He also collects anything to do with Sherlock Holmes and operates a small printing press from his home. "I've stopped being quite as manic about it now. I went through a period where I would regularly look for them. His collection is housed at his home in several small boxes.
