Tone Shoes
It begins in Havana in 1957, where intrepid young journalist Daniel Quinn hunts down and meets his hero, Ernest Hemingway.
Kennedy's portraits of the famous are all sympathetic: Castro,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hemingway and Bing Crosby are all presented as quintessentially nice guys. This is a little hard to swallow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially during Hemingway's bar fight. It's no refereed boxing match: he deliberately sets up an innocent, if annoying, bystander and sucker punches him into unconsciousness. Then he dismisses it as even less than a lark,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having no motive for the act or sympathy for the victim.
Quinn is more sympathetic to the tourist, and visits his hotel room just in time to witness a rebel attack on the nearby presidential palace. Two American tourists are hanging out the window watching the violence unfold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and naturally, one of them dies in the gunfire.
Apart from meeting his hero,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Quinn's business in Cuba is to find and interview Fidel Castro, at this time hiding in the mountains and waging a guerrilla campaign against the Batista government. Along the way Quinn meets and falls in love with Renata, an achingly beautiful young Cuban whose lover,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], member of another rebel group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is killed in that same attack on the presidential palace. For Quinn it's love at first site,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even though Renata is unpredictable and promiscuous.
Through the affluent, connected young woman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Quinn manages to track down and visit Castro, but as he is interviewing him, Renata disappears. It's not until much later in the book we discover just what happens to her - nor do we ever find out under what circumstances she returns to Quinn, though she does.
But the bulk of the book takes place in Albany in 1968, the night Bobby Kennedy is assassinated in California. Albany is already on edge with racial tension,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and this forms much of the background of the ensuing tale. Crooked cops and politicians, poor and homeless blacks, prostitutes and drug dealers are all dragged into the story, one after the other. Quinn's senile father wanders the city on a romantic outing with an old girlfriend, a legendary, dying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], jazz musician is giving his final performance, white racists roam around throwing Molotov cocktails at blacks, and Renata arranges safe passage into Cuba for a former lover. Among other things.
Kennedy maintains a break-neck pace through all of this, never slowing down to merely describe anything, though he piles on event after event and character after character. I couldn't help comparing Kennedy's style to Elmore Leonard's while I read. The prose is stripped down and compact, and the dialogue is all wisecracks and irony. Sometimes Kennedy uses quotation marks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sometimes not, often in the same conversation or even the same paragraph. Especially in the beginning of the book,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are so many characters on stage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's hard to keep them straight when they're little more than names and a few plain lines of dialogue. Since some of them also appear in previous books,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps this is easier for those familiar with Kennedy's work.
In the end it feels like much of what we're told in this book - and we are largely told and not shown - could have been cut, to sprint to the carnavalesque climax, with everyone out roaming the night streets looking for each other - and shelter from the random storm of violence and riots. Still, Kennedy's trademark Albany comes through as a real, living place, and his Havana in the '50s is strikingly similar.
