New Brighton man sues police
District Court in Minneapolis, alleging that officials refused him adequate medical care. He is seeking a lot more than $50,000 in damages.
"The [police and jail] officers should have recognized the requirement for health care," said Robert Hajek, Uzalac's attorney. "These individuals are trained."
It is not the very first time questions have been raised about the management of ill or injured inmates at the Ramsey City jail. In 2007, a diabetic man who was being held there died in his cell. It was the 2nd death of an inmate in the jail since 2006.
A spokesman for the Ramsey County attorney's office said officials haven't yet seen the suit coupled with no comment. on Jan. 9 when Uzalac went outside his apartment for a smoke. He was awaiting a friend in the future over and didn't bother to use heavier clothing. He realized he forgot his keys because the door slammed shut,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaving him outside wearing only socks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shorts and a T-shirt.
He started tossing snowballs at windows for help. Once they learned he had a warrant for giving false information to police, they took him to jail.
Uzalac said he asked to obtain shoes or boots for his feet "which had become red and frozen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]." He said police refused.
In the jail
In the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center, Uzalac said he again were not impressed with his painful and, now blistered, feet. Jail staff ignored him, he explained,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and placed him inside a cell.
Twenty-one hours later, a nurse gave Uzalac "a couple Ibuprofen," Hajek said. It was another 21 hours before the same nurse actually checked out his feet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hajek said.
"Then she says, 'Oh my God,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I've never seen anything like that' and tells the guards to get a wheelchair. 'We need to take him to the ER immediately,'" Hajek said.
By then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Uzalac's sister, who had been looking throughout for him to visit their mother's funeral in northern Iowa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], found bail Uzalac out. Since the family was worried about missing the funeral,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they drove towards the emergency room -- at a hospital in Mason City, Iowa.
On Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the lawyer acknowledged that his client isn't any saint. He's several DWIs and other offenses on his record. Celebrate no difference, he explained.
